Mostafa was the absolutely best person for a tour guide. He was incredible knowledgeable, SUPER KIND and so accommodating from the start to the end. He made sure we were happy, safe and comfortable. When we got sick, he gave us electrolytes, medicine and anything we needed (without charging us). One of the travelers was celebrating a birthday and we only asked Mostafa for a candle but he bought her a huge delicious chocolate cake for all of us to share and enjoy in the Irish pub we went to on our second last night. He also refused to make us pay for it and just did it at the kindest of his heart.
We had our personal security guard who is also a cop and kept us safe but honestly I didn’t feel like I was in danger because the Egyptian people were very kind. There was traffic in one of our bus ride and our security, Ali got out and made way for us by getting the other vehicles to move out of the way. It was funny and really nice actually. The bus driver was super friendly, always had a smile on his face and greeted us going and coming on the bus. He had refrigerated water bottles for us for 5EGP which was a life saver because you will always need water and he sells it the cheapest. Since he was so nice to us and got us to where we needed to be we were all so happy to buy water from him and support him.
The felucca was such a great experience to watch the sunset and sunrise, have the Nubians cook us meals, sail around the Nile river during the day and relax (they have speakers). The bonfire was a dream, they played drums, sang in their language and engaged with us to get us to dance around the fire with donkeys and horses around. Bring sweaters and maybe a jacket depending on the time of year you come because it does get cold early morning. We also got to go swimming and jump from the motor boat.
Mostafa knew where all the great spots were to take the best photos like with pyramids at the background and so much more. He told us really great history, myths and was able to answer all our questions. There was many unexplained things but he even provided us with videos and pictures in our Whatsapp group chat.
The Nubian dinner was delicious and it was prepared by the woman of the house who also did our henna beautifully. We got to see their pet crocodile and held the baby crocodile.
We went on November 2021 and so covid was very much still a thing. It was great because there was hardly anyone when we went. It was so nice to take pictures and videos and see that it wasn’t busy in Giza, Phila temples. Komombo, KARNAK (stunning!!), Edfu, Abu Simbel, the mosques, Hamshepsut, Valley of the Kings, and Colossi of Memnon.
Wait till you go to Bazaar Khan El- Khalili which is the market in Cairo to buy your cheap souvenirs as suppose to buying it at the hotel shops or other sightseeing sports because its the cheapest there. Also, buying the perfumery is worth it (if you like that stuff) and the original Papyrus at the store that they take you because its authentic.
Most hotels have a machine to exchange your money in or withdraw especially if you are exchanging from USD but for CAD you need to go to a bank to exchange. For women, you can pretty much dress how you want but I do suggest being on the conservative side a little. Some days you will have to be covered up for the mosques and traveling to the train. I still always felt safe.
Its so hard to pick my favourite thing for this trip because there was so many amazing moments. Even if there was uncomfortable moments, it was still worth the experience. If I have to choose, Mostafa would be the one thing that made the trip really great because of his expertise and kindness. The 20 something people in our trip was not prepared for the final goodbye because of how great he was and this whole trip was.
Bring medications (advil, cough and cold medicine, diarrhea medicine etc) because most people do get sick. Most people are just not use to being in Africa. You can’t drink their tap water, even brush your teeth with it. Make use of the shower rooms when they give you the time because the felucca or sleeper train do not have showers and you will be going straight to your next sighting.
As busy as it was, you still get time to relax, to sleep (hotel or bus or train). It was well planned, organized, and they are all experts.
We paid and did all the optional activities and it was all really good and worth it (maybe the light show was a little outdated for audio BUT you do get to see the pyramids and sphinx at night).
Oh and you are given enough time to to take pictures, tour around yourself after Mostafa or your guide give you their shpill on the history facts (which are super interesting btw).
Overall, I am very happy with this trip and I am grateful for the experience. Mostafa was great along with our bus driver and 2 different security guards and there was an extra guide for some parts. The crew for the felucca was also super fun, kind and cared for us. Even the hotel staff was super nice, Egyptians overall are very kind people.
This was a great trip. I would suggest the felucca trip with the Egypt tour as suppose to the hotel stay or cruise. It was just a better experience.
