Responsible & Sustainable Travel
At Travel Talk, we operate on the foundational belief that tourism can and should be a powerful force for positive change globally. In partnership with our guests, we are dedicated to generating a positive and lasting impact on the communities and economies we visit.
Our approach involves a profound respect for the local culture, environment, and social customs, which fosters meaningful cross-cultural exchange. Crucially, it also means supporting the local economy by working with local partners, guides, and establishments to ensure the benefits of tourism are kept within the destination.
These core values of responsible and sustainable travel are integral to our corporate ethos. They are formally structured around our economic, social, and environmental responsibilities and are embedded within the operational design of every tour we offer.
Economic Responsibility
Our tours are designed to ensure that the economic benefits of our operations are channeled directly into the local communities we visit.
Local Employment and Partnership
Since 1999, we have preferred to partner with local companies, destination operators, and transportation providers. Our operations sustain the employment of hundreds of local residents, providing stable and valuable income in regions where alternative industries may be underdeveloped.
Support for Community-Based Enterprises
Our itineraries are strategically designed to include and support local businesses. This includes organized visits to initiatives such as a women-run Argan Oil Cooperative, traditional pottery workshops in Saharan oases, and other local and artisanal producers. These visits ensure that our operations directly support local businesses and the preservation of traditional crafts.
Corporate Philanthropy
We regularly sponsor and contribute to charitable events such as the annual Gala on the Green in the United Kingdom and Australia, which benefits a range of charities. Furthermore, we frequently contribute holiday packages to support charity fundraisers within our community.
Social Responsibility
Our approach to social responsibility is centered on fostering authentic connections and ensuring that our presence, in a united effort with all our passengers, is respectful and beneficial to the local social fabric. We also strive for diversity and inclusivity in all our endeavors, from marketing to operation and community support.
Cultural Immersion and Respect
We view our guests as travellers, not tourists. A core component of our tours involves education on local cultural and social norms, facilitated by our local guides. This ensures interactions are conducted with the highest degree of respect for local traditions, customs, and religious practices.
Fostering Authentic Exchange
By facilitating experiences such as sharing tea with Berber villagers or visiting local homes, we create opportunities for genuine, person-to-person cultural exchange. This approach moves beyond surface-level tourism to build mutual understanding and appreciation.
A History of Social Support
Our commitment to social development extends to our history of charitable support. In past years, we have backed organizations focused on diverse social causes, including Shaping Lives (children’s education and healthcare in India), Actionaid (poverty and injustice alleviation across 45 countries), the Willow Foundation (support for the seriously ill in the UK), and Alone in London (homelessness prevention for young people).
Commitment to Education
We believe that education is vital for sustainable development. Travel Talk actively supports local organizations committed to the education and rehabilitation of communities, with a particular focus on providing opportunities for young women in destinations such as Turkey, Egypt, and Morocco.
Environmental Responsibility
We acknowledge the significant impact of tourism on the global environment and are proactively committed to mitigating our operational footprint. Our environmental policy is multi-faceted, encompassing transportation, supplier standards, resource management, animal welfare, and corporate practices.
Sustainable Transportation
We prioritize and strategically select transportation methods with demonstrably lower environmental impact. On land, our tours utilize modern, fuel-efficient coach buses. On water, we sail the Nile in Egypt on traditional, engine-less Feluccas and utilize existing public ferry systems for our Greek island-hopping tours to minimize emissions. We always strive to provide alternative tour options with a lower carbon footprint, avoiding short haul flights and using public train or ferries where feasible. Â
Supplier & Partner Standards
We extend our environmental standards to our operational partners. We assess accommodation partners on their environmental practices, giving preference to establishments that actively participate in towel reuse programs, demonstrate responsible waste management, and work to reduce plastic consumption. Our restaurant partnerships favour establishments that show a clear awareness of responsible and local food sourcing.
Waste & Resource Management
A core component of our policy is the diligent management of resources. We advise against the use of single-use plastics and support our view with initiatives such as providing guests in India with reusable water thermoses. In water-scarce regions, our pre-departure materials include specific guidance on water conservation.
Animal Welfare
We maintain a strict policy against animal cruelty in tourism. We do not promote or sell any activities involving the exploitation of captive wild animals. We adhere to the principles outlined in ABTA’s Animal Welfare Guidelines as a baseline for all operations and work with legitimate establishments committed to the protection and rehabilitation of animals.
Corporate Environmental Practices
Our commitment begins in our own offices. We have transitioned to a near-total digital communication model, drastically reducing paper consumption, and we enforce comprehensive recycling and responsible energy-use policies across all corporate locations.
