Zeugma

Set beside the Euphrates, Zeugma was once a prosperous ancient city connecting Anatolia with Mesopotamia and the eastern Mediterranean. Founded in the Hellenistic period and later flourishing under Roman rule, it became known for its grand villas, riverside setting, and strategic position on important trade routes.

Zeugma’s greatest treasures are its remarkably detailed mosaics, created to decorate the homes of the city’s wealthiest residents. Depicting mythological figures, animals, geometric patterns, and expressive portraits, they offer a vivid glimpse into Roman art and daily life.

Many of these masterpieces are now displayed at the Zeugma Mosaic Museum in Gaziantep, including the famous Gypsy Girl mosaic. Together, the museum and archaeological site preserve the story of one of southeastern Türkiye’s most fascinating ancient cities.
