Tōdai-ji is one of Japan's most historic and celebrated Buddhist temple complexes, located within Nara Park, Nara. Founded in 738 AD by Emperor Shōmu, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that served as the administrative head of all provincial Buddhist temples across Japan during the Nara period.
