Harran

Harran unfolds across the plains south of Şanlıurfa with an appearance unlike anywhere else in Türkiye. Its low, earth-toned buildings, broad horizons, and clusters of conical roofs give the settlement an almost otherworldly character. Rather than presenting history behind museum walls, Harran allows visitors to move through a landscape where ancient ruins and traditional architecture remain part of the same visual story.

The town’s best-known landmarks are its beehive-shaped houses, built with mud brick and topped by tall, domed roofs. Their unusual form is not only decorative. The thick walls and conical interiors help keep the rooms cooler during the intense summer heat, reflecting generations of practical knowledge adapted to the local climate. Many surviving examples date from the past two centuries and were constructed using materials gathered from the surrounding historic site.

Harran and nearby Şanlıurfa have been included on Türkiye’s UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List since 2000, recognising the area’s significant cultural, religious, and architectural heritage.
