Dom Luís I Bridge

Dom Luís I Bridge

The Dom Luís I Bridge is one of Porto’s most recognizable landmarks, stretching across the Douro River and connecting the city with Vila Nova de Gaia. Completed in 1886, the double-deck iron bridge is known for its impressive arch and striking industrial design. Its upper level carries the metro and pedestrians, while the lower level provides another crossing closer to the waterfront. From either side, the bridge offers a memorable view of Porto’s colorful buildings, riverside neighborhoods, and the boats moving along the water.

Walking across the Dom Luís I Bridge is one of the best ways to take in the city’s scenery. The upper walkway is especially popular for its wide views over the historic center and the port wine cellars across the river. Visit around sunset to see the rooftops and river bathed in warm light, or explore the lower level as part of a stroll through Ribeira and Gaia. More than just a way to cross the river, the bridge is an essential part of Porto’s character and a favorite spot for photographs.
