Bridge of Sighs

The Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri) is one of Venice's most famous landmarks, connecting the Doge's Palace to the historic New Prison. Built from white limestone, this enclosed Baroque bridge crosses the Rio di Palazzo and is renowned for its delicate stone lattice windows. Legend has it that prisoners would sigh at their final view of beautiful Venice as they were led across to their cells, giving the bridge its famous name.
