Alfama Neighborhood

The Alfama neighborhood is Lisbon's oldest and most historic district, stretching down the steep hillside from São Jorge Castle to the Tagus River. Spared from near-total destruction during the great 1755 earthquake, it retains its original medieval layout of cobblestone alleys, small squares, and colorful tile-clad houses.
