Spain Travel Advice

Make sure you are up-to-date with the pre-departure essentials before your trip to Spain.

Passport & Visas

If you are travelling to Spain from a country that is exempt from the Schengen visa requirement, you can generally visit Spain for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism and other permitted short stays without applying for a visa. Travellers whose nationality requires a visa must apply for a Schengen short-stay visa before travelling. Applications should generally be submitted at least 15 days before your intended journey and no earlier than six months before travel.

Travellers to Spain must have a passport or travel document that is valid for at least three months after their intended departure from the Schengen Area and was issued within the previous 10 years. It should also contain at least two blank pages. If you are visiting several Schengen countries, make sure you understand where your visa application should be submitted, as this depends on your main destination and, in some cases, your first country of entry.

Check with your embassy or your official government website for regulations. Bear in mind that our Spain travel advice is for guidance only. You are advised to check the details as it is your responsibility to have all the official documents ready before traveling.

You can consult the latest travel advice from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. We recommend all travelers to check their Government National Travel Advisory prior to their departure: AustraliaCanadaNew ZealandUSA

Travel Insurance

You need to have valid and adequate travel insurance before your tour with Travel Talk begins. It is your responsibility to have your insurance ready, but we are more than happy to provide you with guidance in the process. You can visit our travel insurance page for more details.

  • To prevent any unwanted surprises, make sure your plan covers emergency medical situations, cancellations, and threats against your personal belongings.
  • Based on your tour, there may be adventure activities that your travel insurance does not include. So, look carefully at what your policy covers.
  • Make sure you have the latest information regarding safety and health issues. You can find useful Spain travel advice on governmental websites.
When to Go

High Season

The best time to visit Spain is generally from late spring through summer, when long sunny days and warm temperatures make it ideal for exploring cities, enjoying the coast, and taking part in outdoor activities. Summer is the peak travel season, particularly along the Mediterranean coast and on the Balearic Islands, where travellers come for beach holidays, swimming, and lively seaside resorts. Coastal areas often see temperatures around 25–30°C, while inland and southern regions can become considerably hotter.

From April to June, Spain’s countryside and cities take on a distinctly spring-like character, with comfortable temperatures and plenty of opportunities for sightseeing. Visit Seville, Granada, or Barcelona during this period to enjoy major attractions and historic neighbourhoods without the intense summer heat. Temperatures generally range from around 15–25°C, depending on the region, making spring one of the most comfortable times for exploring Spain on foot.

Low Season

Autumn is another excellent time to visit Spain, as the intense summer heat gradually eases and many popular destinations become less crowded. September and October are particularly pleasant for sightseeing, with warm days in much of the country and comfortable conditions for exploring cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, and Granada. Coastal areas can remain warm enough for beach days and swimming well into September, while cooler evenings make autumn ideal for enjoying Spain’s outdoor dining and lively plazas.

Useful Tips for Spain

Money Matters

The currency in Spain is the Euro (EUR). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, shops, and tourist attractions, particularly in larger cities and popular destinations.

ATMs are widely available in Spanish cities and towns, although they can be less common in small villages and remote areas.

While some tourist-oriented businesses may accept foreign currencies such as USD or GBP, payments are generally made in euros.

The Food Scene

Spanish cuisine is known for its regional variety, fresh ingredients, and relaxed approach to dining.

Tap water is generally safe to drink throughout Spain, although some travellers may prefer bottled water, particularly depending on personal taste or the local water supply.

Paella, tapas, jamón ibérico, tortilla española, churros, and regional wines are must-tries during your trip.

Solo Travel

Are you traveling alone? You can stay in a single room if your tour has the single supplement option.

You can also be roomed with a solo traveler of the same gender.

Contact your tour leader for assistance regarding room choices.
